CHALLENGE/

To redesign and revamp the existing MHA NS Portal to enable both current and former national servicemen in Singapore to more quickly, conveniently and easily manage their National Service obligations.

About

Singapore's MHA NS Portal is a centralised platform designed to facilitate the management of National Service obligations by active national servicemen in Singapore. It provides a convenient and efficient way for national servicemen to access essential information, resources and services related to their National Service obligations.

This includes functionalities such as scheduling training sessions, checking their enlistment details, submitting claims, accessing relevant policies and guidelines, as well as staying updated on NS-related news and events.

Design Approach

Over the course of a year, the team at Ernst and Young facilitated an overhaul of the existing MHA NS Portal, the primary objectives of which were to enhance user experience and introduce new functionalities to meet the evolving needs of stakeholder, system admins and users.

As the UIUX designer on this project, I was responsible for the creation of a MHA design system, as well as the translation of functional briefs into low, mid and high fidelity desktop and mobile prototypes that would meet the needs of national servicemen all across Singapore while delivering on an improved user experience.

Design System

As part of this project, a design system consisting of tokens, components, patterns and a set of design principles was created to ensure a structure approach to creating consistent and cohesive user interfaces for the portal.

This helped to greatly streamline what would be a very complex and expansive design and development process, while also facilitating scalability for future growth.

NSmen Dashboard

The user dashboard provides a personalised, summarised view of important activities for National Servicemen, notifying them of important events, payments, and other National Service obligations that demand their attention.

Users may:

  • Get notified of their most recent upcoming scheduled call-ups and view details related to said call-ups via the Upcoming Activities Timeline.

  • Monitor the status of their call-ups and National Service Obligations, ensuring compliance with yearly requirements with the Call-ups and IPPT widgets. This widget also enables users to effortlessly track their fitness test results and any potential awards they may be qualified for.

  • Be alerted to crucial payment-related information, including pending claims requiring their attention, recent payments deposited into their accounts, and updates on submitted claims via the Your ePayments widget.

Manage IPPT and NS FIT

The IPPT, or Individual Physical Proficiency Test, is a fitness assessment for National Servicemen in Singapore. It's part of the broader framework of National Service, which requires Singaporean males to serve in the military or civil defence roles.

Users can track their annual National Service obligations and schedule IPPT and NS FIT sessions to meet these requirements via the Manage IPPT and NS FIT eService. The dynamic dashboard updates in real time according to each NSman's IPPT status, providing live feedback and ensuring users are consistently informed about their progress.

They may also submit new claims, as well as view a record of all their claims and payments.

Mobile responsive

As part of this project, a responsive mobile version of the NS Portal was also designed, with all the same functionalities of the desktop version.

Notify a Trip

An exit permit is an official authorisation required for Singaporean NSmen to leave Singapore for an extended period. With the Notify a Trip eService, users may apply for Exit Permits, as well as keep track of Exit Permits pending approval from admins.

Users are also notified when amendments or additional documentation are required for their pending Exit Permits, and are able to manage any needed changes directly on the portal.
